CGL were appointed by Hackney Council to prepare a conservation-led, mixed use regeneration scheme for a terrace of 16 properties on Dalston Lane

Although not listed, the original properties on Dalston Lane were built circa 1820 and extended toward the end of the 19th century. They lie within a conservation area and are designated Buildings of Townscape Merit.

Child Graddon Lewis was tasked with the design of 44 new market sale homes and over 1,000sqm of retail space, with the aim to reach the Code for Sustainable Homes Level 4. Working closely with the London Borough of Hackney, the main objective was to produce a viable, innovative, part refurbishment / part redevelopment of the site which would blend historic and contemporary architecture and design.

Prior to planning submission, CGL carried out consultation with over 300 residents and six organisations, including English Heritage. Consent was successfully granted in August 2012 and we were subsequently appointed by the developer Murphy Homes to complete the scheme.

The project has included re-building the Victorian terrace to match original details, whilst having a substantial amount of eco-friendly new build. This was coordinated with the help of our design team to achieve the scheme within the constraints imposed by the original buildings.
