The refurbishment of a listed manor house to create 32 houses and apartments on a country estate in Devon.

This project involved the comprehensive refurbishment of a Grade II Listed house and the creation of five new groups of buildings as part of a phased development.

The associated out-buildings and more recent low level additions that adjoin the main house had previously been constructed with little care for the overall composition or the setting of the main house, with phases of more modern construction poorly integrated with the historic structures.

After a complex and lengthy planning process, CGL achieved consent for this wide-ranging development in Greenfield land in Spring 2005. Extensive archaeological and historic studies were necessary as well as adapting the design to house ten protected species of bats that roosted at the site.

As well as the refurbishment of the listed house, the new buildings included a series of modern vernacular barns, landscaped courtyards and a glazed pavilion within a walled garden. A contemporary palette of finishes has been chosen to offset the more historical aspects of the development.
