Plot 408

Spinningfields, Manchester, M3

A feasibility study for the design of a new four-storey arts and leisure building, including café, gallery and event spaces.

Set within a varied urban context, this vibrant building provides a distinctive and contemporary addition to the Spinningfields estate.

CGL’s design has embraced this challenging, triangular site overlooking Leftbank and provides an 800 sqm mixed-use leisure scheme which seeks to reinvigorate the surrounding public realm.

At ground level, the perimeter glazed walls of the café allow visitors and passers-by to see through the building to the public square beyond, whilst on the first floor the gallery and event space is enclosed by folded concrete walls for privacy. Triangular slab voids provide playful vertical views through the building to continually connect the range of uses.

The roof level is designed as a glass pavilion, and provides covered external event space with views of the adjoining Leftbank buildings, including the People’s Museum.
