St John’s Church

Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9

Reordering of this Grade II Listed Victorian Church in Buckhurst Hill, Essex, as the first phase of an extensive programme of works for the church and its community halls.

The works included the re-levelling of the floor, installation of new floor with underfloor heating, a new sunken baptismal pool, new finishes and services.

The congregation of St John the Baptist in Buckhurst Hill, located on the edge of Epping Forest, has a grand vision for the upgrading and expansion of this nineteenth century Grade II Listed church. As the first phase of an ambitious and exciting scheme, the interior of the church was re-ordered to provide a flexible worship space, with up to date services, lighting and audio visual capabilities. The works included the demolition of an existing meeting room, and the entirety of the existing nave and aisle floors were removed in order to provide an easily accessible and flexible new space. A new stone floor was laid, with underfloor heating, surrounding a sunken baptismal pool within the main body of the church, and state-of-the-art audio visual services were designed to intrude as minimally as possible on the building fabric. The result is a clean, light, comfortable and flexible worship space that respects the history of the building while meeting the needs of a modern congregation.

The future stages of this project will include an introduction of a new entrance to the church itself, reorienting the building to open onto a new welcoming atrium which will link the church to the existing adjacent primary school and a new community centre, inviting a wider range of visitors and worshippers to the church and the site as a whole.
