Wilbury Primary School

Wilbury Way, Staffordshire N18

The creation of two contemporary classroom extensions at this expanding primary school, including the refurbishment of IT and arts facilities and the creation of a new sports changing facility.

CGL has completed an 18-month project to provide extra accommodation at the existing site for this prominent Enfield primary school. The school, which has seen pupil numbers rise dramatically over the last 10 years, was forced to expand into mobile classrooms calling for an extension to its existing structure for long term use.

Two new extensions were built, one at either end of the school. The first, a one storey block which houses the Early Years Unit incorporates two classrooms to accommodate four part-time nursery classes, four reception classrooms, a space for special needs teaching and a hall with a kitchen. The second block is home to eight new classrooms over two storeys.

In addition to the new classrooms, some of the existing space was refurbished to give the school improved facilities such as an Information Computer Technology suite, a library, an art/ practical room with kitchen, a music room and study facilities.

The school desired a natural look for the new buildings, complementing the existing structure whilst achieving an identity of their own. CGL selected a mix of traditional and more contemporary materials matching brickwork, cedar cladding, aluminium double glazed windows and metal-profile roofing to achieve the correct balance.

At the same time as working on the main school, CGL also helped to create a new sports changing pavilion consisting of changing rooms and a coaching room.
